About the job

About the Company

Partnering with a well-established, privately held transformer and magnetics manufacturer based in California.

The business has been operating for more than 40 years and designs and manufactures highly customized transformer and magnetic solutions for customers across a range of technically demanding industries.

Rather than focusing purely on standard catalogue products, the company specializes in custom-engineered transformer solutions, giving its engineers the opportunity to work closely with customers, manufacturing and testing teams from initial design through to finished production.

This is an opportunity to join a hands-on engineering environment where designs are developed, prototyped, tested and manufactured within the wider organization.

About the Role

The company is looking to hire an Electrical Design Engineer / Transformer Design Engineer to support the design and development of custom transformer and magnetic products.

You will work closely with engineering, manufacturing and customers to take technical requirements and turn them into practical, manufacturable transformer designs.

The role would suit an engineer who enjoys being involved throughout the complete product lifecycle rather than working solely on calculations or documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop custom transformers and magnetic components based on customer specifications.
  • Perform electrical and magnetic design calculations for transformer products.
  • Support core, winding, insulation and material selection.
  • Evaluate transformer performance including voltage regulation, losses, efficiency and thermal requirements.
  • Produce engineering drawings, specifications, BOMs and manufacturing documentation.
  • Support prototype development, testing and product validation.
  • Troubleshoot transformer and electrical design issues during development and production.
  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs can be produced efficiently and consistently.
  • Review customer specifications and assist with technical discussions and design recommendations.
  • Support modifications and improvements to existing transformer products.
  • Assist with cost reduction, design optimization and product improvements.
  • Provide engineering support throughout the transition from concept through production.

Skills & Experience Needed

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related discipline preferred.
  • Approximately 5+ years of electrical engineering experience preferred.
  • Previous experience designing transformers, magnetics or closely related power equipment.
  • Understanding of transformer electrical and magnetic design principles.
  • Experience with areas such as winding design, core selection, insulation systems, losses, efficiency and thermal considerations.
  • Experience supporting products from initial design through prototype, testing and manufacturing.
  • Ability to interpret customer specifications and translate them into practical engineering designs.
  • Experience working alongside manufacturing or production engineering teams.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability.
  • Experience with high-voltage, power electronics, power supplies or industrial power equipment can also be relevant.
  • Exposure to standards such as UL, CSA, IEEE, ANSI or similar transformer/electrical standards would be advantageous.
  • Comfortable working in a hands-on engineering and manufacturing environment.

Benefits & Opportunity

  • Join an established transformer manufacturer with more than four decades in the industry.
  • Work on genuine custom transformer design rather than purely standard catalogue products.
  • Exposure to a wide range of applications including EV charging, data centers, aerospace, defense, medical and industrial power.
  • Opportunity to work closely with products from design and prototyping through testing and manufacturing.
  • High level of technical ownership and visibility within the engineering organization.
  • Work directly alongside engineering and manufacturing teams at the company’s operation.
  • Opportunity to join a smaller, privately held organization where individual engineers can have a noticeable impact on products and projects.
