South Africa, Western Cape, Swellendam: ACTOM EPC is delivering a 1,000 MVA main transmission substation for Red Rocket’s Overberg Wind Farm development near Swellendam.
Under its contract, ACTOM EPC is responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the substation, which will provide the transmission infrastructure required to integrate electricity generated by the wind farm into the grid.
The project includes the installation of an advanced 500 MVA power transformer, which ACTOM EPC is delivering in partnership with an international company. The substation will also incorporate a security system that includes camera monitoring linked to Eskom’s control centre.
Overberg Wind Farm is being developed and owned by Red Rocket, which is responsible for the project’s development, financing and overall delivery. The region’s strong wind resource has attracted independent power producers, increasing the need for supporting transmission and grid infrastructure.
ACTOM EPC said its scope covers the project from initial engineering and detailed design through construction and final commissioning. The company is also drawing on equipment manufactured within the wider ACTOM group.
Local workforce development forms part of the project, with semi-skilled and unskilled workers from surrounding communities being incorporated into construction teams and receiving training intended to support future infrastructure projects.
According to ACTOM EPC, the project demonstrates the growing scale of generation and transmission investment in South Africa as additional renewable capacity is connected to the national electricity system.
