South Africa, Wadeville: Actom Power Transformers has achieved a major milestone with its transformer testing laboratory receiving recommendation for SANAS ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation, the first of its kind for power transformers in Africa.

This recognition ensures that Actom’s in-house testing, including high-voltage impulse tests and diagnostics, is independently verified to meet global IEC 60076 standards.

The announcement was made during a celebratory Open Day at the company’s Gauteng factory, coinciding with Actom’s delayed 60-year anniversary and the completion of its recent factory expansion. The upgrade increased production capacity by 35 % and included new machinery vital for high-voltage transformer manufacturing.

“Accreditation reinforces our promise of quality and long-term reliability,” said Steve Jordaan, divisional CEO of Actom Power Transformers.

Actom manufactures transformers from 2.5 MVA to 315 MVA (up to 275 kV) and holds over 50 Eskom-approved designs. It plays a key role in South Africa’s renewable energy sector, having supplied transformers to over 60 projects.

With enhanced condition monitoring services and end-to-end lifecycle support, Actom is well-positioned to meet Africa’s rising demand for grid stability and clean energy.
