India, Assam, Guwahati: A new high-capacity transmission project is being developed at Bornagar to reduce the Northeast’s heavy reliance on the flood-prone Bongaigaon substation.

Currently, the Bongaigaon substation at Salakati serves as the main entry point for electricity flowing from the rest of India into the Northeastern Region. Almost all major power lines pass through this single location. Officials warn that this creates a serious system-wide risk, as any disruption at Bongaigaon, situated in a flood-sensitive area, could lead to widespread power shortages, especially in Assam.

To address this concern and strengthen grid reliability, authorities have planned a second major 765/400/220 kV power hub at Bornagar. The site covers Gadaapith and Bhogpur villages under the Sarupeta circle in Bajali district. The project falls under the North Eastern States Strengthening Scheme (NESS) and will be executed by NER Expansion Transmission Limited, a special purpose company cleared by the Centre.

Initially, the Bornagar installation will operate as a 400 kV switching station, with scope for future expansion. It will link to the national grid by diverting sections of the existing Bongaigaon–Balipara and Alipurduar–Bongaigaon transmission lines. This will create an alternative route for power entering the region from Eastern India.

Officials say the project will add much-needed backup capacity, reduce the chances of large-scale outages and ensure a more stable supply for both urban and rural consumers. With Assam’s power demand rising due to urban growth, industry and infrastructure projects, improved transmission efficiency is also expected to lower costs over time. Land acquisition for the project is currently in progress.
