Inside the Development of Our First ATEX Dry-Type Transformer

The increasing electrification of industrial processes in hazardous environments requires transformer technologies capable of combining operational reliability with strict compliance to explosion-protection standards. Industries such as oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, mining, and hydrogen applications demand electrical equipment specifically engineered for operation in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Safer by design

In response to these requirements, TMC Transformers is proud to announce the production of its first ATEX-certified dry-type transformers, marking an important milestone in its technological development and manufacturing capabilities.

These transformers will be installed in Mozambique, more precisely for the safe electrification of a liquified gas refinery in the area.

Our engineering approach focused on three key objectives:

  • Safety in explosive atmospheres through carefully selected materials, controlled temperature rise, and dedicated protection systems.
  • Operational continuity under demanding industrial conditions, including high ambient temperatures, dust, humidity, and corrosive environments.
  • Reduced maintenance requirements, ensuring lower lifecycle costs and increased system availability.

The solution has been found in an IP56 enclosure reinforced with ATEX requirements, which ensures the performance of the transformers in potentially explosive atmospheres, by protecting them from moisture, dust, dirt, and water, eliminating any risk that may affect power transmission or safety. The transformer design includes optimized ventilation systems, reinforced insulation coordination, and thermal monitoring solutions to ensure stable performance even under severe duty cycles. Each unit undergoes rigorous testing procedures to ensure compliance, reliability, and consistent performance.

Outdoor installation, heat, dust, and the harsh environment become harmless due to the enclosure system that protects the transformer and therefore the whole area around it, as ATEX compliance is essential in liquid gas refineries because it ensures electrical equipment can operate safely in potentially explosive atmospheres without becoming an ignition source.
