Canada, British Columbia, Abbotsford: The Clayburn substation in Abbotsford will undergo a major expansion to meet rising electricity demand across the Fraser Valley, BC Hydro confirmed. The project will add a new transformer, increasing the station’s capacity by 50 per cent, which is enough to supply up to 35,000 additional homes.
Construction is set to begin immediately and is scheduled for completion in 2028. Once finished, the upgraded facility will strengthen supply reliability in Abbotsford, Chilliwack and surrounding communities.
BC Hydro said the investment reflects expected population growth in the Fraser Valley, projected to exceed 500,000 people by 2050. Demand is forecast to rise sharply in key areas including the Lickman and Young corridors, Mount Lehman and Sumas.
By adding a new transformer and upgrading equipment, BC Hydro aims to ensure that future demand can be met without compromising service quality.
The expansion marks another step in the utility’s broader effort to modernise British Columbia’s grid as demand for clean electricity continues to rise.
