South Africa, Bloemfontein: Centlec has deployed three new power transformers across its distribution network to replace ageing units and strengthen supply reliability. The installations introduce N-1 contingency at key substations in Bloemfontein and Botshabelo, ensuring that if one transformer fails, the remaining unit will continue supplying load without interruption.

Technical details (as provided by Centlec)

  • Noordstad DC, Bloemfontein
Installed: 20/22 MVA, 132/11 kV power transformer
Purpose: Reinforces the existing transformer to support fast-growing residential and business demand in the northern part of the city.
  • Bayswater DC, Bloemfontein
Installed: 20 MVA, 33/11 kV transformer
Purpose: Replaces a failed unit and restores N-1 contingency at a substation supplying a significant established load.
  • Botshabelo Substation T, Botshabelo
Installed: 20 MVA, 33/11 kV transformer
Purpose: Adds redundancy and supports load growth by introducing N-1 capability at the site.

Centlec describes the upgrade as a targeted investment to improve network performance and support local economic expansion. The utility emphasised that the new units will reduce prolonged outages by enabling load-sharing between two transformers at each location.

“The procurement of these power transformers is in direct response to the requirement of strengthening the secure supply to our Mangaung Metro community,” Centlec noted. “The commissioning of these power transformers will create the N-1 contingency, meaning that the existing transformer will be reinforced with an additional transformer.”

Centlec said the transformers will secure supply to households, businesses, and municipal infrastructure as the metro continues to grow.
