Uzbekistan, Jamashuy: A tragic accident in Uzbekistan has sparked serious concerns about electrical safety after a four-year-old boy suffered devastating injuries from a high-voltage electric shock.

The incident took place in the Jamashuy settlement of the Mingbulak District, where the child reportedly entered an open transformer substation and came into contact with live electrical equipment.

According to the boy’s father, the child accidentally accessed the unsecured facility and was immediately electrocuted. He was first taken to a local hospital before being transferred to specialised medical centres for urgent treatment.

Doctors fought to save the child’s arms, but the injuries were too severe, and both arms had to be amputated.

The case has led to public criticism and renewed debate about the safety and security of electrical infrastructure. The child’s father accused the responsible authorities of failing to provide enough support and avoiding responsibility for the incident.

Meanwhile, the local power distribution company stated that the child entered the transformer station while his father was nearby in a vehicle. Company representatives said such facilities are normally locked, but the security locks may have been damaged or removed by unknown people.

The family later received financial assistance, including around $5,000 (60 M Uzbek sums) from regional electricity services, along with extra support from local authorities.

After an investigation, criminal proceedings were launched against the technician responsible for the site. A court sentenced him to two years of corrective labour, including a 20 % salary deduction, and removed him from his post.
