UK, Scotland, East Ayrshire: Collett & Sons has completed the transport and installation of three power transformers for the New Cumnock substation in East Ayrshire, Scotland, on behalf of transformer manufacturer Kolektor. The project combined heavy-lift operations, modular transport, and precision installation across difficult terrain and tight deadlines.

The operation began at the Port of Ayr, where Collett offloaded 170-t and 121-t transformers using its in-house jacking and skidding systems. Over two days, the transformers were transferred onto modular trailers and stored at the port before final delivery.

Two years later, Collett returned to assemble a 550-t capacity Scheuerle girder bridge trailer, allowing direct loading without cranes. Each transformer was then transported 53 km (33 mi) to a transhipment area near North Kyle Wind Farm, following a carefully managed nighttime convoy with police escorts and local coordination.

Due to restricted access, the final leg required transferring the units onto a 14-axle modular trailer via a lightweight hydraulic skidding system, ideal for navigating the steep and narrow approach to the substation.

At New Cumnock, Collett used advanced jacking and skidding methods to position the transformers on their plinths. Each installation took about nine days, with Collett also overseeing the transport of ancillary parts from Slovenia and crane operations under CPA Contract Lift conditions.

Despite a last-minute landslip that forced a route change, Collett’s team completed the project safely and efficiently, coordinating all aspects from route surveys to traffic and safety management.
