USA, Texas, San Antonio: CPS Energy, the San Antonio-based municipal utility, has agreed to purchase four natural gas power plants in southeast Texas to secure additional capacity for the state’s growing energy demand.
The $1.387 B deal with Missouri-based PROENERGY covers facilities in Brazoria, Galveston and Harris counties. Together, the plants provide around 1,632 MW of capacity, enough to power at least 325,000 homes each year. All four facilities are connected to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid, which manages most of the state’s electricity system.
The acquisition, expected to close in the third quarter of 2025, is seen as a key step in ensuring affordable and reliable power for San Antonio’s 1.3 million electricity and natural gas customers. CPS Energy President and CEO Rudy D. Garza said the plants are capable of running on hydrogen blends in the future, offering flexibility for the company’s longer-term decarbonisation plans.
“This acquisition secures reliable capacity today – at a lower cost – and is a win for the customers of CPS Energy, the city of San Antonio and all the communities we serve by meeting their long-term energy needs,” Garza said.
The purchase aligns with CPS Energy’s Vision 2027 Generation Plan, which sets out a path toward a portfolio that will be 63 % renewable by 2040, up from 22 % today. It also supports San Antonio’s wider commitment to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
Alongside this deal, the city is pursuing a $30 M solar rollout across 42 municipal facilities, further diversifying its energy mix.
