India, New Delhi: Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood has launched a Smart Pad Mounted Substation at Gandhi Nagar, alongside a rooftop solar campaign aimed at increasing clean energy adoption in the city.
The new substation is designed for densely populated urban areas, where space for conventional power infrastructure is limited. According to the Delhi government, the unit occupies nearly 80 % less space than a traditional substation.
The installation is equipped with SCADA technology, allowing real-time monitoring, faster fault detection and improved reliability of power supply. The project forms part of wider efforts to modernise Delhi’s transmission and distribution infrastructure.
Sood said the Delhi government has invested $148 M (Rs 1,427 crore) in power sector capital expenditure over the past year. The investment has supported new substations, network strengthening, the modernisation of ageing infrastructure and the deployment of smart technologies.
The minister also highlighted Delhi’s record peak power demand of 8,748 MW this year, stating that the city met its highest-ever demand without any major outage.
Alongside the smart substation, the government launched the “Solarize East” campaign to promote rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The campaign will provide households with information on subsidies, net metering and installation procedures.
The initiative will initially cover South-East Delhi before being expanded to other BYPL distribution areas.
