China, Shanghai: deugro has completed the transport of nearly 110 km of 132 kV CTS submarine cables from China to Saudi Arabia for the Farasan–Madayah Submarine Cable Project.
The cables were collected at the Port of Changshu and transported by deck carrier to the Port of Jazan. Together with the cable carousel, the cargo weighed more than 5,380 t, requiring specialised vessel chartering, engineering and sea-fastening arrangements.
deugro China acted as the project control tower, working with deugro Saudi Arabia, deugro Chartering and dteq Transport Engineering Solutions. Limited vessel availability required the teams to identify a carrier with sufficient deck space and the necessary technical capabilities.
Engineering reviews identified challenges caused by the highly concentrated cable load. dteq worked with the vessel design institute to revise longitudinal-strength calculations and introduced steel shims to distribute loads across the deck’s main structural members. Sea-fastening arrangements were also adjusted to maintain protection against sliding and overturning during transport.
“The safe and timely delivery of this critical subsea cable project is another example of deugro’s ability to deliver complex cable logistics solutions,” said Erwin Visser, Manager, Subsea Cable Logistics at deugro.
Installation of the carousel took 15 days with a 30-person team, followed by ten days of continuous cable spooling. The vessel then sailed to Jazan, where the cables were delivered on schedule to support the project’s cable-laying programme.
