Ghana: Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced a major transformer upgrade at the Kumasi Ridge substation aimed at improving power reliability and service in the area.
The maintenance work is scheduled to take place from Wednesday, 6 May, to Saturday, 9 May 2026. The project forms part of the government’s Transformer Replacement and Upgrade Programme, which is designed to ease pressure on the distribution network and strengthen infrastructure.
As part of the upgrade, the existing 20 / 26 MVA transformer will be replaced with a higher-capacity 30 / 39 MVA unit. The Kumasi Ridge project follows similar upgrades already completed at substations including Adenta, Nmai Dzorm, Lashibi, and Teshie-Nungua.
To allow the work to be carried out safely, customers within the Kumasi Ridge catchment area will experience planned, phased power interruptions during the four-day period. ECG stated that outages are expected to last around six hours, depending on the daily schedule.
The company said the upgrade will bring several long-term benefits, including increased supply capacity, reduced system overloads and equipment failures, fewer and shorter outages, and improved voltage stability.
ECG added that detailed outage timetables will be shared through its official communication channels. While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by temporary disruptions, the utility stressed that the work is necessary to ensure continued improvement and maintenance of the power distribution network.
