Czech Republic: EG.D, a member of the E.ON Group, is using LiDAR-based 3D detection and digital twin technology at high-voltage transformer substations in the Czech Republic to improve situational awareness, security and operational safety.

Across Southern Moravia and Southern Bohemia, EG.D operates a large network of unmanned substations that support regional power distribution, stepping voltage down from the transmission grid for homes, hospitals, industry and local communities.

The system continuously scans and visualises substation environments, giving operators detailed 3D insight into site conditions. When an object is detected, cameras can be automatically directed towards it, supporting faster verification and response.

Safety zones around high-voltage equipment can also be defined in 3D space. If personnel enter a hazardous area, the system can issue real-time alerts, helping reduce risks during maintenance, construction or other on-site activities.

Portable LiDAR units provide additional flexibility and can be quickly deployed through a tablet interface for temporary maintenance, construction or security needs.

The pilot phase is intended to validate the technology before wider implementation, with the aim of strengthening infrastructure resilience and improving safety across EG.D’s substation network.
