Germany: The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved financing of up to $820 M (€700 M) for the Gennaker offshore wind farm in Germany. The project is being developed by Skyborn Renewables, with total costs estimated at around $3.6 B (€3.1 B).
The wind farm will be built in German territorial waters within the 12-nautical-mile zone, off the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. It is the first offshore wind project connected under the “territorial waters regulation”, which allows grid access through approval under Germany’s Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG).
Skyborn initially received approval in 2019 for a 103-turbine layout using Siemens Gamesa 8.4 MW turbines. The design was later updated in 2024 to 9 MW turbines, and has since been revised again. The current plan includes 63 Siemens Gamesa turbines, each with a maximum capacity of 15.5 MW, giving a total output of up to 976.5 MW.
The project was fully approved by the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in December last year. Installation of the turbines is expected to begin in late summer 2027.
Earlier this year, Skyborn Renewables and transmission system operator 50Hertz signed an agreement supporting grid connection development for the project. This paves the way for full commissioning by mid-2028.
Meanwhile, the HSI Joint Venture, made up of HSM Offshore Energy, Smulders, and Iv, is constructing two offshore platforms for the grid connection system. Their fabrication work is now close to completion.
