Germany / UK: CPP Investments and Elia Group, through its international development platform WindGrid, have agreed to acquire the Tarchon subsea interconnector project from Copenhagen Infrastructure V, managed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
The project will create a 1.4 GW HVDC connection between Germany and the UK, strengthening cross-border electricity flows and improving security of supply. It is also expected to support the integration of renewable energy and the long-term decarbonisation of both power systems.
CPP Investments will commit $710 M (C$1 B) for a majority interest, while WindGrid will hold a minority participation representing a 25 % look-through stake. The project is progressing through the required regulatory approval processes in both countries.
“By combining CPP Investments’ global investment capabilities with Elia Group’s proven expertise in designing, building and operating complex transmission systems, the partnership is well positioned to deliver a project such as Tarchon,” said James Bryce, Head of Infrastructure at CPP Investments.
Bernard Gustin, CEO of Elia Group, said the interconnector will help balance electricity supply and demand while strengthening Europe’s grid resilience. He added that cross-border infrastructure remains essential to building a more integrated and sustainable European energy system.
WindGrid CEO Daniela Baratto described Tarchon as an important project that complements Elia Group’s regulated transmission activities and supports the growing need for well-developed international electricity connections.
The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions.
