USA, Arizona, Maricopa County: Electric Research and Manufacturing Cooperative, Inc. (ERMCO), a producer of distribution transformers, has announced the opening of a new manufacturing facility in Maricopa County, Arizona. The expansion marks a major milestone for the company and its mission to be the industry’s most valued partner.
The new site will create more than 500 jobs and represents ERMCO’s first manufacturing operation west of the Mississippi River. Located around 48 km (30 mi) west of Phoenix, the facility will expand the company’s three-phase transformer production and support future manufacturing innovation.
Spanning 52,594 m2 (566,121 sq ft), including 378 m2 (4,070 sq ft) of office space, the plant is expected to be fully operational in 2027. Foundational work is scheduled to begin in 2026 to prepare for full-scale production.
ERMCO selected Arizona for its strong business environment, skilled workforce and proximity to key utility customers across the Western United States. The location will allow the company to reduce transport times and costs, improve delivery efficiency and build closer partnerships with local communities and workforce development programmes.
Increasing three-phase transformer capacity is critical as utilities respond to urban growth, grid modernisation and the need to replace ageing infrastructure. Many transformers currently in service are decades old, creating urgent demand for reliable, modern equipment. ERMCO’s investment is aimed at meeting these challenges while improving long-term grid resilience.
ERMCO President and CEO Tim Mills said, “This expansion is about more than building a facility – it is about building the future. Our goal is simple: power the grid and power progress. This investment ensures ERMCO is ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.”
Founded in 1972 in Dyersburg, Tennessee, ERMCO now operates facilities across North America, with Arizona becoming the latest addition to its manufacturing network.
