China, Suqian: State Grid Suqian Power Supply Company has completed its first integral lifting and installation of a factory-assembled distribution transformer set during an upgrade in Siyang County, Jiangsu Province.

The unit was installed in one hour at the overloaded Baiding No. 5 transformer site in Peiwei. According to the source, conventional installation of a comparable transformer site takes at least four hours and involves pole erection, transformer lifting, distribution cabinet installation, cable termination, wiring and commissioning.

State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power launched a pilot programme earlier this year to shift more distribution transformer assembly work from the installation site to factory production facilities.

Under the approach, most assembly and connection work is completed before delivery. On site, crews carry out the integral lifting of the assembled equipment and complete the remaining connections.

The company said the method reduces work at height by more than 80 %. Cable termination and wire fastening are standardised on assembly lines, while each module undergoes quality inspection before leaving the factory.

The pilot is intended to reduce installation time and limit the amount of work carried out directly on distribution poles.
