Taiwan, Taichung: Two major offshore construction milestones have been completed at the 495 MW Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm, with the export cables connected to the offshore substation and the substation structure fully installed.
Jan De Nul’s cable-laying vessel Willem de Vlamingh pulled the project’s two high-voltage export cables into the offshore substation, completing the offshore grid connection. The company had previously installed, buried and protected the 45 km and 44 km cables before storing them offshore until the substation was ready.
CDWE, a joint venture between DEME and Taiwan’s CSBC, completed the transport and installation of 99 pin piles, the substation foundation and the topside ahead of schedule using the installation vessel Green Jade.
The foundation and topside have a combined weight exceeding 8,000 t, making the facility the largest offshore substation installed in Taiwan to date. Semco Maritime and PTSC M&C were awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the 500 MW substation in 2023.
CDWE will now continue installing 33 jacket foundations for the project’s Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines. Van Oord is responsible for transporting, installing and burying the 33 inter-array cables.
Developed by Copenhagen Offshore Partners for Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Fengmiao 1 is located around 35 km off the coast of Taichung. The project is scheduled to begin commercial operation in 2027.
