UK, England, Monk Fryston: National Grid will complete a major milestone in its Yorkshire GREEN project on Sunday, 12 October, with the delivery of the final 200-t transformer to the under-construction Monk Fryston substation. The transformer will travel from Goole Docks to the site on a specialist 80-m vehicle, moving at low speed under police escort. The daytime delivery, which follows a carefully coordinated plan with police and highways agencies, aims to minimise disruption. Rolling road closures and temporary parking restrictions will be in place along parts of the route,
National Grid thanked local communities for their patience, noting that supergrid transformers are essential to upgrading and reinforcing the high-voltage network in Yorkshire. The project supports efforts to connect more home-grown British energy, meet growing demand, and strengthen local economies by creating jobs and delivering cleaner, more affordable electricity.
The Monk Fryston delivery forms part of the Great Grid Upgrade, a nationwide effort to modernise and reinforce the UK’s electricity network. The arrival of this final unit marks the near-completion of deliveries to Monk Fryston, with one more transformer scheduled for Overton in the coming weeks.
