UK, Scotland, Argyll: SSEN Transmission has delivered the first of two supergrid transformers to its new Crossaig North substation in Scotland.

The transformer, weighing around 200 t, was transported by sea from Poland to Campbeltown Harbour before continuing by road along the A83. For the final 24 km to site, it was moved using a remote-operated 14-axle trailer.

The unit will now be installed as part of the electrical system at the 275 kV Crossaig North substation, which is being built under SSEN Transmission’s wider Argyll & Kintyre infrastructure programme.

A second transformer has already arrived at Campbeltown Harbour and is expected to be transported to Crossaig North in the coming weeks.

The delivery follows recent transformer transport operations to the Creag Dhubh substation further north and forms part of broader reinforcement works across Argyll and Kintyre.

The programme is intended to increase transmission capacity and support the connection of additional renewable generation in western Scotland.
