Ghana: The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has begun upgrading over 2,000 transformers nationwide to improve power distribution and reduce outages.
As part of the programme, a 22-year-old transformer at the Nungua district office has been upgraded from 50 MVA to 60 MVA to strengthen supply in the Tema area.
The initiative targets overloaded infrastructure, low voltage and frequent power interruptions across the network. ECG Managing Director Kwame Agyeman-Budu said the work covers several substations, with 10 transformers in Accra and two in the Ashanti Region, alongside others in Kumasi and beyond.
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, urged consumers to remain patient during the upgrade period, noting that some temporary outages are expected. He explained that transformer replacement requires planned shutdowns for safety reasons.
The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernise Ghana’s electricity infrastructure and improve service delivery nationwide.
