China, Anhui, Hefei: Hitachi Energy has announced a $300 M investment in China to expand manufacturing capacity for power transformers and critical components amid growing global demand for grid equipment.
The investment will strengthen the company’s power transformer and component manufacturing capacity in Hefei, including a new power transformer factory, an ultra-high-voltage bushing facility and a digital production line for tap changers.
Hitachi Energy said the additional capacity is intended to ease supply bottlenecks and strengthen the global transformer value chain. The investment forms part of the company’s wider $9 B global programme covering manufacturing capacity, engineering, research and development and partnerships.
“As demand for electricity surges, driven by rapid growth in AI, data centres, mobility and industrialisation, the need for critical grid equipment has never been greater,” said Bruno Melles, CEO of Hitachi Energy’s Transformers business. He added that the expansion would strengthen both local and global transformer value chains.
China is an important manufacturing base for Hitachi Energy, which has operated in the country for more than four decades and currently has 11 manufacturing sites.
“The establishment of a state-of-the-art power transformer factory and the new ultra-high-voltage bushing facility, as well as the launch of the digital production line of tap changers, are key milestones,” said James Zhao, Executive Vice President and Region Head North Asia at Hitachi Energy.
The company said the expanded facilities will serve both China’s domestic power-system development and growing international demand for transformer equipment.
