USA, Gallman: Hitachi Energy has announced plans to invest $528 million in a transformer factory in Mississippi, creating more than 700 jobs. The project forms part of the company’s approximately $1.5 billion US manufacturing expansion programme.

The Gallman facility will be located about 6.5 miles from the company’s existing Crystal Springs plant. It will be more than twice the size of the current factory and will more than double production capacity. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with transformer production scheduled to start in 2029.

Production will continue at Crystal Springs until the new factory is completed, before transferring to Gallman. The existing building will remain in use for warehousing, training or other operational purposes.

According to Hitachi Energy, the additional capacity will help meet electricity demand from advanced manufacturing, industrial electrification, data centres and other energy-intensive industries, alongside grid modernisation and expansion. The project is the company’s largest single US investment to date.

The announcement follows other manufacturing investments across the country. In June, Hitachi Energy broke ground on a $457 million expansion of its large power transformer factory in South Boston, Virginia, expected to create 825 jobs.

Other projects include a $106 million expansion in Alamo, Tennessee, to increase transformer component production and create more than 100 jobs, and a $70 million expansion of high-voltage equipment facilities in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.
