Finland, Haapajärvi: Hitachi Energy has agreed to supply power conversion solutions for Finland’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS), developed in Haapajärvi. The company has signed the deal with Nordic Electro Power (NEPower), which is delivering the project.

The 125 MW / 250 MWh facility is being built by Swiss energy company Alpiq. It will serve Fingrid’s reserve market and help manage changes in electricity supply and demand. Hitachi Energy’s systems are designed to boost overall performance while strengthening the reliability of Finland’s power network.

As part of the agreement, Hitachi Energy will provide key equipment such as a Power Conversion System, transformers, Ring Main Units, a Power Plant Controller, and a SCADA-based energy management system. The package also includes support for installation monitoring, commissioning, maintenance, and system integration.

These tools allow real-time supervision and control, early fault detection, and improved operational decisions. This helps ensure dependable performance for Alpiq throughout the project’s lifetime.

The solution is modular and scalable, and built to operate in tough Nordic conditions. It supports fast load response, strong cybersecurity, and grid-forming capabilities. Together, these features contribute to Finland’s energy security and carbon neutrality goals.

Hitachi Energy says energy storage and power electronics play a vital role as the energy transition gathers pace. With global storage capacity expected to grow rapidly, reliable grid technology is becoming increasingly important.

Construction of the Haapajärvi facility is already underway, with commissioning planned for mid-2027.
