Italy, Rome: e-distribuzione, the Enel Group company operating Italy’s national electricity distribution network, has awarded five contracts for the supply and installation of high-voltage to medium-voltage transformers to Hitachi Energy Italy.

The contracts were concluded during January and February 2026 following a competitive negotiated procedure conducted under the EU Utilities Directive. The award was published on 4 August 2026.

The overall transformer programme is valued at approximately $209.19 M (€181.76 M), while the tender value attributed to Hitachi Energy Italy was $96.88 M (€84.18 M). The scope includes the transformer units and the installation, electrical and commissioning work required to place them into operation.

The equipment will support e-distribuzione’s national grid modernisation and expansion programme, strengthening the connection between high-voltage transmission infrastructure and medium-voltage networks serving industrial, commercial and residential customers.

Five major manufacturers participated in the procurement process. Alongside Hitachi Energy Italy, bids were submitted by Getra Power, MATELEC, Siemens Energy Transformers and S.E.A., reflecting strong international competition for large Italian utility transformer projects.

Hitachi Energy Italy secured the work through five separate order agreements, which may cover different equipment packages, delivery locations or installation schedules across the country.

e-distribuzione manages approximately 1.1 million kilometres of network and serves more than 30 million delivery points throughout Italy.

The programme highlights the continued need for investment in primary substations, transformer capacity and distribution-grid reliability as electricity networks adapt to changing demand and further electrification.
