Canada, Quebec, Varennes: Hitachi Energy has announced a $270 M investment to expand its manufacturing facility in Varennes, near Montreal. The site is one of the world’s largest producers of HVDC transformers, and the expansion will almost triple its annual output capacity.
The project is expected to create around 500 new jobs and strengthen Canada’s position in the global supply of transformers and related grid equipment. Hitachi Energy said the investment will help meet rising demand for large power transformers, reactors, and HVDC technology, driven by electrification, renewable integration, and transmission grid upgrades.
Carla Vicente, Country Managing Director for Hitachi Energy in Canada, said the expansion reflects the company’s commitment to increasing global transformer production capacity. “This investment enables us to respond to fast-growing demand for critical grid components and support the transition to a more sustainable energy system,” she noted.
The Varennes expansion follows a $140 M investment announced in 2024 to modernise and grow operations at the same site. Together, these projects underline the strategic importance of the Quebec facility within Hitachi Energy’s global manufacturing network.
The company highlighted that expanding capacity in Canada will support North American energy infrastructure needs and help deliver more reliable, sustainable electricity to communities as demand continues to grow.
