Finland, Vaasa: Hitachi Energy and transmission system operator Fingrid have signed an agreement for the delivery of seven large power transformers to strengthen Finland’s main grid.
The transformers will be rated at 400 MVA and 400 kV. The agreement also includes an option for two additional units of the same type.
The order is linked to Fingrid’s 2026–2035 main grid development plan, under which the company plans to invest around $6.0 B (€5.2 B) in the grid over the next ten years. The investments are intended to strengthen transmission capacity, support the electrification of industry and society, and secure the growing production and consumption of clean electricity in Finland.
All transformers covered by the agreement will be manufactured at Hitachi Energy’s new transformer factory under construction in the Vaasa region. The facility is part of Hitachi Energy’s $197 M (€170 M) investment in the new Hitachi Energy Park production and technology centre.
The factory is expected to be completed in early 2027. Once operational, it will double Hitachi Energy’s transformer production capacity in Finland and bring large power transformer manufacturing back to the Vaasa region.
Matti Vaattovaara, CEO of Hitachi Energy Finland, said the agreement is an important opening for large power transformer production at the new factory and a significant step for Finland’s security of supply.
Timo Kiiveri, Deputy CEO of Fingrid, said large power transformers play a key role in enabling industrial electrification and customer connections, adding that domestic transformer production strengthens supply-chain reliability.
The transformers will be delivered between 2029 and 2032 to Fingrid’s existing and new substations across Finland.
