South Africa, Cape Town: At Enlit Africa 2026 in Cape Town, Huawei, together with CIGRE and Zhuhai Unitech Power Technology Co., Ltd., introduced an Intelligent Substation Solution designed for Sub-Saharan Africa. The system combines intelligent video monitoring, AI-based analysis, and secure wireless communication networks to support substation operations and maintenance.

According to speakers at the event, the technology can automate several manual processes, including inspections, meter reading, and analysis, while also enabling remote monitoring of substations. Representatives said the system had reduced inspection times from days to minutes and lowered operation and maintenance labour costs by 70 %.

Huawei executives said the growing use of communication networks, digitalisation, and AI is changing power generation, transmission, and distribution systems. Industry representatives also highlighted the importance of secure and reliable communication infrastructure for the development of future energy systems in Africa.
