Canada, Ottawa: Hydro Ottawa has energized the Piperville municipal transformer station, its first substation built using a lower-carbon design.

The 90 MW facility will serve customers in southeast Ottawa and matches the capacity of the utility’s Cambrian MTS, commissioned in 2022. Hydro Ottawa said the new design reduces embodied carbon emissions by 12.3 %, equivalent to 618 t of CO2e.

The reduction was achieved through a more compact layout, lower-carbon concrete and reduced use of raw materials. Compared with the Cambrian baseline, emissions associated with the physical building were reduced by 508 t and yard emissions by 202 t, partly offset by a 92-t increase associated with heavier power equipment.

The Piperville station also provides additional system redundancy and capacity for new residential and commercial development, as well as municipal transit electrification.

The facility is designed to support future connection of distributed energy resources, including rooftop solar and battery energy storage systems.

Hydro Ottawa said the lower-carbon approach will be applied to future major municipal transformer stations. Upcoming projects include Hydro Road and Mer-Bleue, scheduled for 2027, followed by Old Second Line and Greenbank in 2028.

The Cambrian facility, which has a similar footprint and 27.6 kV capacity, is being used as the reference site for measuring lower-carbon performance.
