USA: South Korea’s Hyosung Heavy Industries has secured transformer orders worth a combined $286 million from two major US technology companies. The equipment will supply new artificial intelligence data centres in the southern and northern United States, according to the Korea Herald.
The agreements cover 765 kV transformers valued at ₩220 billion ($158.9 million) and 345 kV transformers worth ₩166.5 billion ($120.2 million). The company announced the contracts on Tuesday.
Construction of AI data centres is increasing pressure on US power grids and driving investment in transmission and distribution equipment. Citing Goldman Sachs, Hyosung said US data centre electricity demand is expected to grow by an average of 15% annually through 2030, requiring approximately $50 billion in additional energy infrastructure investment.
Hyosung is expanding its transformer factory in Memphis, Tennessee, which it acquired in 2020. In July, it established a joint venture with North American energy infrastructure company Quanta to manufacture ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers in the US.
The company also created a dedicated data centre team in early September, bringing together specialists in transformers, circuit breakers, energy storage, microgrids and static synchronous compensators (STATCOM).
Orders received between January and August totalled approximately ₩9.3 trillion, surpassing the company’s total for 2025. Hyosung subsequently increased its annual order target from ₩8.4 trillion to ₩12 trillion.
