USA, New Mexico, Taos: Kit Carson Electric Cooperative has been selected by the US Department of Energy for up to $38.1 M in federal funding to upgrade its main transmission line between Taos and Questa, New Mexico.
The 41-km (25.5-mi) project is expected to cost about $50.8 M, with Kit Carson Electric planning to contribute $12.7 M in cost-share funding if the full federal amount is awarded. Final funding amounts are expected to be announced in October.
The project forms part of DOE’s $1.9 B SPARK initiative and is intended to modernise rural grid infrastructure.
Kit Carson Electric CEO Luis Reyes said the transmission upgrade would improve service in northern Taos County and strengthen the co-op’s ability to respond to wildfires, high winds and flooding.
Kit Carson Electric serves just under 30,000 member-owners and business accounts across Taos, Colfax and Rio Arriba counties.
