Puerto Rico: LUMA announced installation of 20 new transformers in substations across Puerto Rico, strengthening the grid at strategic points supporting the island electrical system.
Two most recent units were energised at Veve Calzada Substation in Fajardo and Bayamón TC Substation, improving capacity, voltage regulation and reliability for about 6,000 customers in east and 72,000 in Bayamón area.
“Each transformer installed is a concrete step towards stabilising the system and improving service,” said Heriberto González, director of Capital Programs Construction.
Bayamón TC Substation is a key transmission hub in the northern region, connecting multiple transmission and distribution lines between north and south of the island. Its replacement strengthens stability, improves energy transfer capacity between regions, and reduces risk of large outages.
In Fajardo, the transformer replaces a unit that failed after Tropical Storm Ernesto in 2024; service had been temporarily maintained using a portable transformer. The project is funded by the US Department of Energy.
Director of Substations Hendzon Martínez said work continues under a preventive and corrective maintenance plan. So far this fiscal year, 56 % of transformers under the plan have received scheduled maintenance, and nearly 2,800 substation points have been worked on or repaired across the island, supporting reliability as reconstruction continues.
