UK, London: National Grid has announced $845 M (£624 M) in contracts with 78 companies across England and Wales to support electricity network maintenance and infrastructure upgrades over the next five years.
The suppliers include 69 small and medium-sized enterprises, which will contribute to projects forming part of National Grid’s broader $54 B (£40 B) investment programme for UK energy infrastructure.
The work will cover maintenance and enhancement of the strategic electricity transmission network, supporting new connections and increased demand from homes, factories and data centres.
National Grid said the programme is also expected to generate local employment and training opportunities. On one major converter station project, early estimates indicate around 270 local jobs, more than 3,000 apprenticeship weeks and opportunities for approximately 30 local SMEs and community organisations.
The contracts include work on substations and other transmission infrastructure across England and Wales.
National Grid said the supplier programme is intended to strengthen domestic delivery capability while supporting the expansion and modernisation of the electricity network.
