Nepal, Kathmandu: Nepal plans to bring 10 new transmission lines into operation during fiscal year 2026/27, including the strategically important 400 kV Hetauda–Dhalkebar line and the New Butwal–Gorakhpur cross-border connection with India.
The 135 km Hetauda–Dhalkebar line is nearing completion, with 372 of 378 towers finished and conductor stringing completed across most of the route. Once energised, it will strengthen east-west power transfer within Nepal and support electricity exports through Dhalkebar.
The 400 kV New Butwal–Gorakhpur line is also expected to enter service this fiscal year. The Nepal section covers about 18 km, while the Indian section extends around 117 km. The link is initially expected to support exports of 200 MW to India.
A third major project, the 220 kV Tumlingtar–Sheetalpati line, is also in its final stage and is targeted for operation by early 2027.
Seven additional 132 kV transmission projects are progressing across the country, including Kohalpur–Dailekh, Kaligandaki–Ridi, Bhumahi–Hukai, Amarpur–Dhungesahu, Lalbandi–Simalpur, Balefi–Barhabise and Kushma–New Modi.
Together, the projects are expected to improve domestic transmission capacity, regional power flows and grid reliability, while creating additional infrastructure for cross-border electricity trade.
