USA, New York, Dansville: New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has installed a new power transformer at its Meyer Substation in Dansville, doubling the facility’s previous capacity.
The upgrade is part of a wider multi-phase substation rebuild designed to modernise ageing infrastructure and strengthen the local power grid. Once the first phase is completed this autumn, NYSEG said the improvements are expected to benefit around 6,740 customers in Dansville and nearby communities.
Built in 1948, the Meyer Substation is an important hub in NYSEG’s transmission and distribution system. It supplies smaller substations across the region and delivers electricity directly to local customers by stepping down voltage for distribution lines.
The new transformer replaces older equipment and increases the amount of power the substation can handle. Crews have also installed new breakers and support equipment to reduce outage risks and improve system reliability.
According to NYSEG, the project is intended to support rising electricity demand and improve grid performance during extreme weather conditions. The company said the works will also strengthen the broader transmission system, meaning customers beyond Dansville may also benefit from improved reliability.
The first phase was funded through NYSEG’s 2023 rate case, approved by the New York State Public Service Commission.
NYSEG plans to begin the second phase of the rebuild by the end of this year. That stage will include adding two more transformers and redeploying an existing unit to further expand substation capacity.
