Oman, Al Duqm: Two wind energy projects with a combined capacity of 58 MW are progressing at the Special Economic Zone at Duqm as part of the Duqm City Renewable Energy initiative led by Naqaa Sustainable Energy.
The Duqm North and South Wind Project will comprise six wind turbines across two sites and is expected to generate around 190 GWh of electricity annually. The projects are intended to supply renewable power to a wind turbine manufacturing facility being developed in Al Duqm.
Design Group Engineering Consultants has completed the electrical design scope for both developments, taking them through concept design, regulatory approvals and grid-connection planning to construction readiness.
The 9.6 MW Duqm North project includes a 33 kV electrical system extending around 2.5 km from the turbine switchgear to the grid connection point, with underground cabling, protection and SCADA systems.
The larger 48 MW Duqm South project will use five turbines and includes 33 kV inter-array cabling, medium-voltage collection switchgear, step-up transformers, a 132 kV switchgear bay and a nine-kilometre overhead transmission line. Extension works are also planned at the receiving substation.
The projects form part of a wider renewable energy programme in Oman, alongside planned wind developments in Al Duqm, Mahout and Sadah with a combined capacity of up to 1,100 MW.
