USA: The board of directors of PJM Interconnection has approved a proposed approximately 350-km (220-mi), 765-kV transmission line developed jointly by NextEra Energy Transmission, LLC and Exelon Corporation. The project aims to strengthen electric reliability and maintain affordability in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the wider Mid-Atlantic region.
PJM, which manages the electric grid across 13 states and the District of Columbia, determined that growing reliability challenges require large-scale transmission investments rather than smaller, localised upgrades. Rising electricity demand in the region is placing pressure on existing supply.
The new transmission line will increase grid capacity and support the connection of new generation resources. The companies say it will help provide reliable and affordable electricity for households and small businesses, while also attracting industrial investment and boosting economic development. Construction is expected to generate jobs in the region.
“This transmission line enables long-term safe, reliable and affordable power for the region—this is a win for residents and a win for the local economy,” said Matt Valle, president of NextEra Energy Transmission.
Carim Khouzami, executive vice president of transmission and development for Exelon, added: “As electricity demand increases are outpacing the current supply, this investment will be critical to ensuring we can bring the energy needed to meet the needs of families and small businesses across Pennsylvania and West Virginia while keeping customer affordability at the forefront. This result will allow us to deliver meaningful, lasting value for the region.”
NextEra Energy Transmission and Exelon plan to engage with local communities, including hosting open houses later this year to gather input and reduce potential impacts on landowners and surrounding areas.
