USA, New Hampshire, Portsmouth: The US Department of Commerce recently unveiled plans for a $33 B natural gas power plant in the Portsmouth area. The 9.2 GW facility will be financed by Japan and operated by SB Energy, a subsidiary of the Japanese SoftBank Group. Once completed, it will be the largest gas-fired power generation plant in the world.

This ambitious project is part of a broader $550 B trade agreement between the US and Japan. However, details about the exact location of the plant remain unclear. The US Department of Energy still owns land near the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant site in Piketon, but local officials, including Pike County Economic Development Director Gary Arnett and Scioto County Commissioner Scottie Powell, have said they have not received further information on the project’s site.

While the location remains uncertain, the scale of the project is substantial. The 9.2 GW plant is set to significantly impact energy production and bolster the US-Japan trade relationship.

The announcement has sparked interest in the Portsmouth area, but local leaders await further clarification from the federal government. The project will likely bring significant economic benefits and job opportunities to the region once it is finalised.
