Poland, Choczewo: Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe and the Bechtel-Westinghouse consortium have agreed on the main commercial terms for an engineering, procurement and construction contract for Poland’s first nuclear power plant.

The planned facility will use three Westinghouse AP1000 Generation III+ pressurised water reactors with a combined generation capacity of 3,750 MW. The parties aim to complete negotiations and sign the EPC contract by the end of 2026.

The plant is planned for the Lubiatowo-Kopalino site in the Choczewo commune. PEJ handed over the project site to Bechtel in August, while preparatory work includes grading and levelling, drainage upgrades, temporary roads and geological surveys.

PEJ applied to Poland’s State Atomic Energy Agency for a construction permit in March. The first nuclear concrete pour is targeted for 2028, while the first electricity from the plant is expected to reach the Polish grid in 2036.

The project has already awarded around $250 M in contracts to Poland-based companies, including Budimex, Doraco, Unihouse, MSA Security and Barg M.B Gdańsk.

Nearly 200 Polish nationals are currently working on the project, with another 100 in recruitment. Workforce development agreements are also in place with three Polish universities.
