Poland: Ørsted and PGE have started full offshore construction work on the Baltica 2 wind farm, with the first foundations now installed in the Polish section of the Baltic Sea. The 1.5 GW project will become Poland’s largest offshore wind farm and is expected to supply electricity to around 2.5 million households.
Installation work is being carried out by Van Oord, which will place 111 monopiles offshore – 107 for wind turbines and four for offshore substations. The campaign is set to continue until the fourth quarter of 2026.
The monopiles measure around 100 m in length, exceed 10 m in diameter, and weigh roughly 1500 t each. Designed individually for their specific seabed locations, the structures are built to withstand harsh marine conditions for up to 30 years.
Baltica 2 is jointly owned and operated by Ørsted and PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna under a 50/50 partnership. The wind farm will be located about 40 km off the coast near Ustka and is scheduled to be fully operational in 2027.
The project already has a 25-year inflation-protected contract for difference with the Polish state, alongside all required permits and a grid connection agreement with transmission operator PSE.
Executives from Ørsted, PGE and Van Oord described the milestone as an important step for Poland’s energy transition, energy security and long-term offshore wind development.
