Spain, Valencia: The Port Authority of Valencia has launched a tender for a new 110 MW substation that will double the port’s power supply capacity.

The $18.2 M (€15.6 M) project, named ST Port Authority of Valencia 2, will include two 55 MW transformers and connect the northern section of the port’s internal network to the high-voltage distribution grid.

The project will use gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) housed within an enclosed building. According to the Port Authority, the design reduces land requirements by up to 80 % compared with an equivalent outdoor installation and provides additional protection against saline marine conditions.

The switchgear will also use technology intended to minimise greenhouse-gas emissions through gases with low global warming potential.

The additional capacity is intended to support rising electricity demand from cargo terminals, logistics facilities and Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems, which allow berthed vessels to switch off auxiliary engines and use shore-based electricity.

The new facility will operate alongside the port’s existing substation, with the two substations supplied through separate grid connections. This arrangement is designed to improve resilience by allowing loads to be transferred between substations during maintenance, network faults or periods of high demand.

The project is co-funded by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility and forms part of Valenciaport’s wider electrification and Net Zero programme.
