UK: National Grid Electricity Transmission and SP Energy Networks have selected Prysmian as preferred bidder for the HVDC cable system on the Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) project.

EGL4 will create a 2 GW subsea and underground link between Fife in Scotland and West Norfolk in England. Stretching 646 km, the cables will carry enough renewable electricity to power two million homes, strengthening energy security while supporting the transition to clean and affordable energy.

The announcement follows a competitive procurement process and marks a key milestone ahead of a full contract award. Planning applications are due in Scotland in late 2025 and in England during 2026. Authorities stressed that the preferred bidder decision does not influence the outcome of the planning process.

If approved, construction is expected to begin in 2029, with the link scheduled to enter service in 2033. The joint venture between National Grid and SP Energy Networks is part of the UK’s wider strategy to upgrade transmission capacity and integrate more renewable generation.
