Ukraine, Kyiv: A large-scale Russian assault overnight on 20 January struck multiple Ukrainian regions, causing civilian casualties and widespread disruption to critical infrastructure, local authorities reported.
The attacks targeted Kyiv Oblast and the capital Kyiv, as well as Zaporizhzhia, Rivne, Odesa, Kharkiv, Poltava, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. Russian forces employed drones and missiles aimed at both civilian and strategic sites, including substations serving nuclear power plants.
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 18 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 339 drones, including approximately 250 Shahed-type drones, with Kyiv being the primary focus. Ukrainian air defences successfully intercepted 27 missiles and 315 drones. Among the weapons deployed was a Zircon anti-ship missile, noted for travelling significantly faster than standard cruise missiles.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram that the attack involved “updated tactics” by Russian forces, though he did not elaborate further.
Authorities are assessing the full impact as thousands remain without electricity, water, or heating, while emergency crews work to restore vital services.
