China, Wuwei: State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) has reached two ultra-high voltage transmission milestones, completing the Gansu Section 1 of the ±800 kV Gansu–Zhejiang UHVDC line and commissioning the 1,000 kV Caozhou UHV substation expansion in Shandong province.
The Gansu section was completed by State Grid Gansu Electric Power Company in Minqin county, Wuwei city. The section covers 135.6 km, includes 273 transmission towers and crosses two expressways, two provincial highways, one railway, and several power and communication lines.
The route is the only section of the project that crosses around 115 km of the Tengger Desert, with about 85% of tower foundations located in sandy terrain.
To address these conditions, the project used fully mechanised construction, new foundation techniques and ecological restoration measures.
Together with the Caozhou substation expansion, the work highlights China’s continued investment in UHV transmission infrastructure to support long-distance power delivery and grid capacity.
