Germany: Siemens has introduced a Managed Detection and Response (MDR) service aimed at improving cybersecurity for energy providers and operators of critical infrastructure, including data centres and airports.
As information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) continue to merge, companies are dealing with a growing number of security alerts while often lacking the staff and expertise to manage them around the clock. Siemens said its MDR service is designed to address this challenge and support secure operation of increasingly digital systems, in line with EU NIS 2 cybersecurity requirements.
The service offers continuous monitoring, incident analysis and recommended actions, enabling faster responses to potential cyber threats. Security data from IT and OT systems is collected and analysed at a Security Operations Centre, where events are assessed and prioritised. Customers then receive guidance on how to respond to issues, from minor alerts to critical incidents. Detection rules are regularly updated to reflect evolving threats.
Siemens stated that the service can reduce initial investment costs compared to building an in-house security operations centre, while also lowering ongoing operating costs through a scalable service model.
A German municipal utility, Hertener Stadtwerke, is among the first users of the system, applying it to protect its operational infrastructure.
The service aligns with Siemens’ Charter of Trust principles, which promote common standards and rules for cybersecurity. The company said this approach helps organisations strengthen protection while continuing their digital transformation.
