Germany, Baltic Sea: Amazon and Skyborn Renewables have signed a 600 MW Power Purchase Agreement for carbon-free electricity from the Gennaker offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.
According to the companies, this is the largest single PPA ever signed in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. Amazon’s long-term commitment gives Skyborn the financial certainty to move ahead with construction of the project.
Gennaker will add up to 976.5 MW of new offshore wind capacity to Germany’s electricity system. The wind farm will be located around 15 km north of the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and is expected to become the largest offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea.
The project will include 63 offshore wind turbines, each rated at 15 MW. Once operational, it is expected to generate enough carbon-free electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million German households each year.
Construction is expected to start after Skyborn reaches financial close in summer 2026, while the wind farm is planned to become operational toward the end of 2028. Gennaker will also contribute to Germany’s target of 30 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2030.
The project represents a $3.4 B (€3 B) investment in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Monopile foundations will be manufactured by EEW Special Pipe Construction in Rostock, around 40 km from the project site.
Rocco Bräuniger of Amazon said: “By signing our largest power purchase agreement in Germany, we’re giving Skyborn the certainty to move forward with Gennaker, bringing nearly one gigawatt of new offshore wind capacity onto the grid, strengthening Germany’s energy security, and supporting jobs and investment in the region.”Adam Thomsen of Skyborn called the agreement “a defining milestone for Gennaker and Skyborn”.
