France, Paris: SSEN Transmission has placed its first orders for standardised modular substations in the north of Scotland, marking a major step in its programme to accelerate and simplify renewable grid connections.

The milestone was highlighted at the CIGRE Paris Session, where SSEN Transmission joined supply partners Hitachi Energy and GE Vernova to mark progress on the initiative.

Under framework agreements awarded in May, the two suppliers will deliver modular substations designed for 132 kV and 33 kV applications. By the end of 2026, SSEN Transmission expects to order 15 modules representing more than 1 GW of renewable generation capacity, with further orders planned.

The modular approach allows a large share of assembly, wiring and testing to be completed off site in controlled factory environments. SSEN Transmission said this can reduce on-site construction time, site footprint, costs and disruption while maintaining required safety, quality and reliability standards.

The substations are particularly suited to smaller grid connection projects, including individual wind farms and other renewable generation schemes.

SSEN Transmission plans to deploy the modular substation concept across the majority of its customer connection portfolio, with the first energisations expected from autumn 2028.

The programme forms part of the company’s broader effort to modernise grid infrastructure delivery and support faster connection of new renewable generation.
