England, Monk Fryston: A 200-t supergrid transformer is set to be delivered to the new substation under construction in Monk Fryston, North Yorkshire, on 17 August 2025. The delivery marks another milestone in National Grid’s Yorkshire GREEN project, part of The Great Grid Upgrade to strengthen the UK’s high-voltage network.
Transformers of this scale are critical to converting electricity to the correct voltage for safe and efficient transmission from generators to homes and businesses. The transformer, weighing the equivalent of 100 average cars, will travel from Goole Docks on a specialist 80-m vehicle under police escort at low speed.
This will be the second of eight supergrid transformers to be delivered to substations in Monk Fryston and Overton, with four destined for each. The first unit arrived at Overton on 6 July, and additional deliveries will continue over the coming months.
Martin McGready, National Grid project director, said: “Supergrid transformers are essential to our work upgrading the high-voltage network in Yorkshire and beyond. These improvements will connect more home-grown energy, meet growing demand, create jobs, and support cleaner, more affordable power.”
The delivery will involve rolling road closures and possible temporary parking restrictions, with some road signs and street furniture adjusted to allow safe passage. National Grid is working closely with the police and highways agencies to minimise disruption.
