India, Tamil Nadu: The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has carried out a series of infrastructure upgrades to ensure steady electricity supply during the coming summer months. Officials say the improvements will help residents avoid power disruptions even during peak demand.

According to the Electricity Department, several new transformers and substations have been commissioned, underground power cables have been laid, and transformer capacity at key substations has been enhanced.

A senior official said the city’s peak summer demand, typically between March and June, reaches nearly 3,600 MW. In response to rising consumption in the northern region, the department has set up seven new substations and added 19 power transformers.

New 33 kV substations have been established at Broadway, Mundakanni Amman in Mylapore, Ganesh Nagar in Kolathur, and two locations in Paruthipattu near Avadi. Transformers have also been installed at Ganesh Nagar, Mathur, Ennore, Madhavaram, Kodungaiyur, Athipattu and Alamathy.

To address low voltage issues, 1,360 distribution transformers have been erected in the northern region. The department has also completed 868 km of high-tension and 596 km of low-tension underground cable networks. Over 5,000 old concrete poles have been replaced, along with 445 km of damaged conductors.

Consumer activist T. Sadagopan urged faster upgrades of the 110 kV substation in Avadi to 230 kV and the establishment of a 33 kV substation inside Tidel Park at Pattabhiram.
